A Little Trip

Fifties Ensemble
Fifties Ensemble

I'm packing my little bag (notice I said "little", I'm trying to pack light) to leave very early in the morning. I can't wait! I'll check in while I'm gone and hopefully have some great pictures to share.

Wish I could just tuck all you lovely readers in my bag and bring you with me! Wouldn't we have fun?

Ladies Who Lunch

Women sitting at a Cafe Terrace
Cafe Terrace

My mother and I recently had the most perfect afternoon together. She took me to lunch at the cutest little cafe. It only had about 12 tables and was tucked away in an older part of town that I rarely visit. It was the sort of place that men rarely go to unless coerced, and almost every lady eating there was dressed up. It's not the sort of place that you go to in shorts and flip-flops. I was so glad I was wearing a skirt! We both had raspberry iced tea and a grilled shrimp, portobello mushroom, farfalle salad with a spicy dressing. Very "girly food" and I enjoyed every single girly bite.

Then we walked over to a vintage clothing shop. You wouldn't believe all the goodies! There were dresses, hats, shoes, jewelry, handbags and clutches...all from the 40s, 50s and 60s. We had so much fun "window shopping". The proprietress of the shop was a little strange and pushy, but she had some really gorgeous things (all priced way out of my budget of course but it was still fun to look).

Next we went to a thrift shop and I found two tops for Marcia and a dress for myself. It's one of those dresses that is sort of like a long t-shirt. It comes to my ankles and doesn't touch anywhere but the shoulders. I love it! It is the most comfortable thing ever, plus it was $5. I'm guessing from the lime green color and summery "fish" print that it was meant to be worn as a swimsuit coverup or beach dress, but I wore it to the grocery store. :) Please don't call the fashion police.

After that we went to an antique mall. Are you sensing a theme here? I found LOTS of things that I wanted to bring home with me. There was an vintage apron that was calling my name as well as some 50s patio furniture and a set of pink corning ware but I had to leave it for another day. I wish I had remembered my camera so I could show you how cute everything was.

As much as I love my menfolk, it's fun sometimes to have a day with no one saying "why are you looking if you aren't going to buy it?", "is it time to leave yet?" or "can't we just get a hamburger?". What are your favorite things to do with your gal pals?

Budget Bedroom Makeover

My friend Retrohousewife is a great DIYer. When we lived next door to each other we were always painting or hanging wallpaper or ripping up carpet at either her house or mine.

Her latest project has been to do a room for her oldest daughter. Her oldest son recently graduated from high school so now it her daughter K's turn to have the honor of her own bedroom. Retro accomplished this entire project while K was out of town as a surprise AND she did everything on a budget.

Here are some "before" pictures.

Retro bought these wall hangings (below) at Big Lots. There were mirrors included in the set, but she knew she wasn't going to need them. She got the price knocked down because the mirrors were cracked (it never hurts to ask). Wait until you see what she does with them.

Retro bought the dresser and nightstand last summer at an estate sale. She paid $50 for the set (including the mirror). She didn't have K's room in mind at the time, she just loved the mid-century look of the furniture.

Here is the finished project. Retro calls this look "Gothic Chic". Three of the walls are black and the fourth is white. She found the bedding on clearance at Target (and it was the last set). Can you believe how perfectly it goes with the "headboard"?

She found the sunburst clock at Ross for $15 and the frame around it was part of the wall hanging that she used for the headboard.

The curtain panels were made with the top sheet of the bedding. She used Stitch Witchery and didn't even have to get out her sewing machine. The green sheers were $7 at Ross. She used oil-based paint for the furniture and a foam roller to give it such a pretty and sturdy finish.

The chandelier was $80 at Lowe's.

She bought these frames for 75% off at Target last year. The were $2.48 for a package of two. She put cute scrapbook paper (also on sale at Micheal's) in the frames.

She bought the chair for $5 at a garage sale. She lightly sanded it, painted it with gray spray-paint primer and then coated it with two coats of red spray paint. The cushion was recovered with fabric from Hancock's. The two red shag rugs were $35 each at Wal-Mart.

The headboard was 6 panels. The total was $45 for the panels plus 2 cans of white spray paint.

She estimates that she spent about $500. This price includes the Serta bed which she bought at HEB (yes it is a grocery store). :)

K was thrilled, as you can imagine. She is going to have a fantastic Senior year in this bedroom.

Use your imagination when garage sale or clearance shopping and don't be afraid to try something new in your house.

Make Do Monday - Technology

My Family is what you might call "technology challenged". It's not that we don't like technology, we just don't have whatever is the latest "new thing".

My laptop was a freebie from my oldest son. All I had to pay for was a new power cord. Notice the cute electrical tape. That's to keep the cord from falling out of the back. The plug-in part is messed up so we are making sure it can't go anywhere although it still jiggles and turns off unexpectedly sometimes. :)

We don't have a flat panel TV, our TVs don't get a digital signal, and we don't even have Tivo.

Now, don't get me wrong I wouldn't turn down a new fancy TV (although I would much rather have a dishwasher), but we are getting along fine without one. No matter what you might be persuaded to think from watching commercials, you can still have a great life and even watch TV, check email and blog without that newest gadget. :)

Summer Heat

Summer Fun
Summer Fun

It's a good thing I live in Texas, because I love the Summer heat. OK, let me clarify that. I love summer heat the modern way. I love Summer heat when I have an air-conditioned home with ceiling fans to escape to, a pool in the backyard and an air-conditioned vehicle to drive. How those poor pioneer women survived in their long sleeved-dresses and no relief from the heat I don't know.

So what's to love? Well, the grass is a gorgeous shade of green under the shade of the willow tree, the garden is growing despite being occasionally trampled by little doggy feet and that Wal-Mart pool was the best money ever spent by the grandparents. Now that we've had several days of triple digit weather I love floating around in the cool water with the kids (the water was too icy before and I'm not a fan of my lips turning blue).

Grab yourself a big ol' glass of sweet tea from the pitcher in the fridge and come on out and float with me, won't you? We can talk and laugh and watch the kids play until the cows come home (whenever that is). Be sure and put on your hat and some sunscreen! Maybe I'll even make us an icebox pie.

Someone Has To Do It

The unavoidable reality about cooking, cleaning and laundry and all sorts of other household tasks is that they have to be done. There's no way around it. Whether you are single, married, children or no children, someone has to do it. Betty Crocker is not going to come over and make dinner and the laundry fairies are not going to deal with Mt. Washmore no matter how many times we click our heels together. :)

Sure, you could pay someone to do it, but would they bring the warmth and order to your home that you would? Would they carefully plan the menu making sure to incorporate all the fresh tomatoes and herbs from the garden and then cook the meals with love? Would they create a home that your family loves to live in? I think not.

Ladies, as homemakers we have the opportunity to take our time with these daily tasks. We don't have to be on fast forward all the time. We can make our homes into bastions of comfort and contentment and leave a legacy of love and joy for our children.

By the way, one of the definitions of bastion is "a stronghold into which people could go for shelter during a battle". Isn't a battle exactly what our loved ones face out in the world every day? Don't you want your home to be a bastion?

I want to encourage you to live a thoughtful and meaningful life as you make a home and go about your daily tasks. Serving your family can be creative and fulfilling if you make the choice for it to be. Each moment you can choose to notice the little luxuries in your life, the beauty around you, and give thanks to your Creator for all your blessings. You can choose to add to the quality of the lives of those around you rather than detract from it.

Laugh with your children, enjoy the soft, fluffy towels warm from the dryer, listen to the birds outside your kitchen window, smell the freshly brewed coffee and realize that each new day is a gift from God.

Someone has to do it. Aren't you glad you get to be the one?

I Hate Swimsuits!

Ladies on Beach, Florida
Ladies on Beach, Florida

We are going swimming with my two best friends and their families and I do not have a decent swimsuit! I have two choices. One swimsuit is a pair of swim shorts that are faded by years of chlorine with a top that is two sizes too big. The other has a skirt with a scoop neck top and is done in an oh so attractive old-lady print. Which to choose...ugly or uglier? That's what I get for putting off shopping for a swimsuit for at least the past 2 years.

I'll just have to wear my adorable "patio dress" until the last moment right as I jump in the pool and hope that I can get under the water before anyone has a chance to catch a glimpse.

We're going to have so much fun catching up and chatting! I can't wait!

Back Porch Musings

Legs and feet of a child in pool's tube
Legs and feet

I'm sitting on the back porch watching our clothes dry, the kids swim and the dog pant.

I have laundry that needs folding, bathrooms that need cleaning and baking that needs doing. Maybe I'll get to it when VBS week is over, but then it will be time for football camp.... :)

Make Do Monday - Iced Coffee

I looooove iced coffee in the summertime. I like the Starbucks version and the McDonald's version, but my budget doesn't like either. I only get to drink it occasionally as a splurge.

It finally hit me yesterday that I could make iced coffee at home (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer am I?). Mike made me my usual cup of coffee and I just stuck it in the freezer while I took my shower. After it was nice and chilled I poured it into a tall glass, added milk, a couple of Splenda packets, and some ice. It was delicious! Even though that's probably not how iced coffee is really made, I like it so I'm going to keep it up. Why didn't I think of this a long time ago?

I'm linking this post to Ann Kroeker's Make Do Monday, but I don't know that it's really making do. After all, now I can have iced coffee anytime I want!

Winner, Winner!

Marcia and I put all of your names into a cute red enamelware bowl (aren't you glad your name was in such a cute bowl? :) ). Marcia closed her eyes, swished all the names around and picked...

Congratulations Denise!

Lavish Summer

No price is set on the lavish summer;
June may be had by the poorest comer.
~James Russell Lowell, The Vision of Sir Launfal, 1848

I'm so thankful for the long days of June and the feeling that anything is possible.
