Topps Football 1956
Bobby has started a morning football camp. It goes on for weeks, but only lasts about an hour and a half each morning. There's not much point in making the 15 to 20 minute drive back home (plus the cost of gas), so I usually take a book or two or run a quick errand. There are CVS and Walgreen's stores nearby, so it's been a great way to fit that in.
It's funny how much I've been enjoying that time. Yesterday I splurged and bought myself a Diet Coke at Sonic, found a strategic shady parking space (parking spaces around here are valued not for the proximity to the door of a building, but for shade), rolled my windows down and settled in to read Gracious Living in a New World by Alexandra Stoddard. I could just make out a corner of the football field through the trees, and hear the whistles of the coaches and the voices of the boys floating on the breeze. It was a perfect, restful summer morning. Who would have thought that sitting in a van in a parking lot would be so much fun? I didn't even mind that Bobby smelled like a locker room on the way home (of course he's so darn cute how could I?) . :)

I've always loved the time during sports practices! I bring a book or magazine and catch up on listening to my podcasts. It's so relaxing!
But one time last month at Spencer's baseball practice I made the mistake of leaving the lights on (it had rained a little bit on our way to practice and I didn't remember to turn them off) and I was listening to the radio, with the car turned off of course. Well, I ran down the battery! And wouldn't you know that none of the many fathers at the practice had jumper cables! I thought that was some kind of law, all men must carry jumper cables in their pick-ups! I guess I'll have to get some for my van. ;)

I've come to appreciate and even look forward to my "alone" time when I'm dropping off/waiting/picking up my kids.
It took me a while to realize, hey, I CAN enjoy and have fun with myself....whether it be running errands, stopping for a snack to enjoy all by myself, or just sitting reading/listening to the radio.
It can be a real treat!

This is the first year in MANY, MANY that I won't have a boy playing football.
I love those little windows of down time wherever they come...and hey!! Great Idea! What a silver lining to an otherwise gray cloud of gas prices--for those of us who have a hard time slotting those times in...BINGO! Gas management gives a frugal built-in, no-ques-asked, excuse!
Re Momala (donja just Hate when that happens?!) has anyone tried those "seen on TV" solar powered window fans to keep the inside cool while parked in hotter climates? I just got my parents one as a gift and I'm dying to know "if they really work".
Whenever I am taking my hubby to and from places and have to wait in the car I take a book, but I also take my Bible and catch up on some major Bible reading while I wait for him.
It's amazing how many chapters I can do just sitting there in the car!
Hope you are having a good weekend!

Mindy, I had something similar happen one time, so now I DO carry booster cables in my van. :)
Donna, it's nice to have a few minutes of downtime isn't it?
Tracy, I don't know what I'll do when Bobby finally finishes his football "career". I've been watching my boys play for so many years, I have come to really enjoy it.
Martha, my best friend and I were saying that very thing... I CAN'T go home because of the gas prices. I'm only doing this to save us money. ;)
Dawn, I think I'll take my Bible and my notebook tomorrow. Great idea!
